Dear Jenn,

About a month ago my Mom and I started taking Flora Source. I’m happy to report that you’ve got a customer for life in me! I’m feeling great – no more constipation, bowel movements are like clockwork, and my belly just feels much calmer and more relaxed.

Unfortunately, Mom is complaining about gas since she started taking the product. She would like to stick with it because it’s helping her irregularity, but unless the gas symptoms go away soon, she will stop taking it.

I read somewhere that the scFOS prebiotic (an ingredient in Flora Source) causes gas in some people. Could that be what’s happening with Mom, and if so, is it a temporary thing? I’d really like to see her stay with Flora Source so we can team up our orders and take advantage of your great sales!

 Sincerely,
Margaret

Dear Margaret,

Thank you so much for your question and wonderful comments.  I am so glad that you are seeing the great results that so many others are also having!

One of the reasons your Mom may be having gas is that, as we grow older, our bodies produce fewer digestive enzymes. As a result, when we eat, the food goes into our stomach and rots.  This creates all kinds of gas and unpleasant gurgling. Your Mom may want to try a digestive enzyme to help the process of breaking up the food and helping her body absorb the nutrients.  We have two products featuring digestive enzymes:

ZymaZorb Digestive Enzymes contain scFOS non-gas producing fiber and 18 vegetarian enzymes – 15 enzymes to target the stomach and three enteric-coated enzymes to support digestion in the small intestine. ZymaZorb promotes efficient breakdown of carbohydrates (sugars), fats, and proteins to support normal metabolic digestion, nutrient absorption, and regularity.

FloraZyme Digestive Aid contains five probiotic strains and 5 billion probiotic cells per serving,* scFOS non-gas producing fiber, and the same 18 vegetarian enzymes as in ZymaZorb.  FloraZyme helps alleviate occasional indigestion, supports optimal nutrient absorption, and promotes a balanced digestive system.

Although FOS has been known to cause gas, we chose a short-chain version that is typically non-gas producing.  Please let me know if you have any other questions that I can help answer.

Sincerely,
Jenn

We get a lot of customer inquiries about Flora Source – questions ranging from the simple and straightforward to the surprisingly esoteric.

Most people want to know about storage and potency of the probiotics. This can be tricky, and I’ve touched on some of these topics in past blog posts. (See Probiotic Products and Moisture, Shelf Stable Probiotics and Handle With Care: Probiotics Need Your Protection).

Now and then I will choose some of the most common questions and post them here. Even if we revisit the same issue, it will benefit the newer customers and maybe offer some updated information to our old friends. Here are some recent questions handled by our Customer Care staff:

Q. How do you take Flora source Multi-Probiotic Powder? The label suggests one teaspoonful … to be taken with what? Juice, water, etc.?

 A. Many of our customers like to add the powder to a morning smoothie. You can mix it into juice, water or milk, or sprinkle it on food – it doesn’t have any noticeable taste.  Remember, though – probiotics are heat-sensitive, so don’t mix your Flora Source with hot food or beverages.

Q. Is Flora Source gluten-free? Are there any animal ingredients?

 A. No gluten or animal ingredients. People who are sensitive to wheat or gluten can safely take Flora Source. And vegetarians can take it with a clear conscience!

Q. What is the best way to start a Cleanse/Replenish regimen with Detoxicor and Flora Source?

 A. If you have never taken Flora Source before, start by taking Detoxicor for 10 days according to the suggested use (i.e. 1 to 4 capsules per day for no more than 10 days). Afterwards, begin taking Flora Source daily to build up your healthy, balanced gut “ecosystem.” For those who have already been taking Flora Source daily, just continue taking it throughout your 10-day cleanse.

Bif Relief 24-7: The Unsung Hero in Flora Source

Dear Jenn,

I recently read about the reformulation of Flora Source to include “Bif Relief 24-7″ yet I do not see it on the label.  Does it go by another name?

- Mary Ann W.

Dear Mary Ann,

An exciting new clinical study recently was completed on one of the existing strains in Flora Source, Bifidobacterium lactis HN019. This study showed that this specific strain significantly improved common digestion and colon problems, and actually helped stool move through the bowel 20 hours faster than 2,000 other probiotic strains!

As a result of this study, this exclusive strain was renamed Bif Relief 24-7™ and you’ll surely be reading about this natural wonder in the weeks and months ahead.

The good news is the Flora Source you know and love already contains Bif Relief 24-7, though we’ve used the clinical scientific name — Bifidobacterium lactis HN019 — on the label.

Admittedly, this is a bit confusing. We’re in the process of communicating to our Flora Source customers that whenever you hear about Bif Relief 24-7, don’t feel as though you’re missing out!  HN019 is the same as Bif Relief 24-7, and our forthcoming new product labels will make this very clear.

So – what does this mean for you?

It means you don’t have to do anything special to enjoy the benefits of the very best probiotic supplement on the market today — because you’re already taking Flora Source!

Yours in good health,

Jenn

Dear Jenn,

I take Flora Source capsules and would like to give my toddler the benefit of probiotics. My question is, can I give him Flora Source? Would it be all right to open up a capsule and sprinkle it on his food? Would the probiotic still be effective … that is, would the powder sprinkled on food still reach the part of the intestines we want it to reach for best health results, or would the probiotic get destroyed before getting to where it needs to go?

Thanks,
Heather

Dear Heather,

It’s great that you are ensuring that your toddler enjoys the health benefits of probiotics. Flora Source can be a good supplemental source of these friendly flora, in addition to a varied diet.

In a recent report summarizing the findings of several studies, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) stated there is growing evidence of probiotics’ considerable health benefits to children.

Our probiotics are grown to be acid and bile resistant so they can make it through the stomach to do their work in the intestines. So, it is perfectly all right to break open the capsules and sprinkle the powder on your child’s food. Food may be warm but not hot (heat kills the bacteria). Also, the food should be eaten right away.

Keep in mind that Flora Source is also available in a powder form, as well as capsules.

We suggest the following doses for children:

  • 1/3 teaspoon for children ages 5-12.
  • 1/8 teaspoon for children 4 and under.

Thanks for your question, Heather. We love hearing from our loyal Flora Source customers!

Yours in good health,

Jenn

Dear Jenn,

I am using the Flora Source Multi-Probiotic and am very satisfied. However, I have noticed that when I take the capsules out of their original bottle and put them in my pill container, the probiotic powder in the capsule seems to change, almost as if it has gotten moisture in it.  Does this affect the potency of the probiotic?

Thank you!
Jeanette

Dear Jeanette,

It’s possible that the Flora Source was exposed to heat, air or moisture after it left the original container. Even a very small exposure could have caused the change you noticed.

A lot of people ask about storage of probiotics. Most of them wonder why we say Flora Source is “shelf stable” and that refrigeration is not required. They are, after all, live organisms, so a certain amount of care is necessary to keep them viable until you need them.

In general, most probiotics should be stored in the refrigerator or other cool, dark place.  Refrigeration is NOT necessary for Flora Source because it has undergone a microencapsulation process which helps protect the active cultures. Flora Source is freeze dried, with a shelf life of 18 months.

Problems do occur when you start getting much above room temperature. Don’t leave them in the hot sun all day.  And NEVER introduce moisture to the probiotics. As soon as water is added, the freeze-dried bacteria return to life and their metabolic processes start up again … and outside of a friendly environment (such as a human digestive tract), they will quickly begin to die.

So my recommendation is to keep your Flora Source in its original container and carry it with you when you travel. Just make sure you never leave it inside a hot car!

Thanks for taking the time to contact us with your question.

Wishing you the best of health!
Jenn

A systemic enzyme works throughout the body, rather than specifically targeting the digestive tract, as with digestive enzymes. Serratiopeptidase is a natural systemic protein enzyme produced by the silk worm. The silk worm uses it to dissolve the wall of its cocoon.

When consumed, serratiopeptidase works throughout the body to promote healthy levels of normal inflammation. This systemic enzyme helps break up cellular debris to support healthy circulation in joints, muscles, and throughout your body.**

Nutri-Health’s ArthroZyme® contains 10 mg of serratiopeptidase in each tablet. I tell my customers that they can start by taking 1 tablet and work up to 3 if needed. If you find that you do need to take more than 1, it is best to take them separately throughout the day. If you are someone who experiences a nauseous feeling when you take supplements without food, please take it with a small amount of food like a yogurt or some toast.

Most of our customers say that they see results in about 1-3 weeks with ArthroZyme®. The benefits from using this product range widely and vary for each customer as we are all unique.

** Serratiopeptidase may have a modest blood thinning effect, so if you are taking any blood thinning prescriptions, please consult a health care provider before you take this product.

You probably saw Mairi’s blog article on pet health, pet wellness, and probiotics last week. I’m just so excited about our new Nutri-Health for Pets Probiotic product, I had to put in my two cents.

I have 5 large breed dogs and 2 cats, all of whom have been taking probiotics for the last few years. I’ve been giving them our human supplements to enhance their pet wellness and was thrilled to find out our new NH for Pets Probiotics product also contains human-grade ingredients. Quality ingredients make all the difference for pet health support.

My Pet Health Story
I started my dogs and cats on probiotics as a preventative maintenance program to keep them healthy. Within about a month of taking probiotics, I could tell my dogs felt like a million bucks! They were always a little droopy and listless before, but now their energy levels are great. I’ve also noticed that probiotics help keep their stool at a healthy consistency (not runny), which is also a sign of good pet health.

My dogs and cats LOVE the taste of probiotics thanks to the slightly sweet flavor. One of my dogs, Whiskey, won’t even let me get the food in the bowl before she’s lapping up the probiotics at the bottom. I just sprinkle the powder (about 1 tsp) on each dog’s food once daily and let the probiotics do the rest!

My dogs and cats are just healthy inside and out, and I know the probiotics have made a difference in the way they feel.

Probiotics for Pet Health and Pet Wellness
I cannot recommend probiotics enough for pet health and pet wellness. I tell everyone with pets about this fantastically easy way to help keep your pet healthy.

Probiotics help support your pet’s:

• Digestive health by supporting healthy flora levels in the intestines
• Immune health by supporting a healthy balance of “good” bacteria in the body

Plus, our new NH for Pets product also contains digestive enzymes, which help your pet efficiently break down and absorb their food. Since we’ve introduced this product it’s been flying out of here. It seems a lot of our customer’s love their pets.

Here’s to our healthy pets!

We have such a great customer care team here at Nutri-Health, and one of our latest team members is Carolyn! Here’s Carolyn, happily hard at work …

Carolyn at Nutri-Health Supplements

Carolyn’s favorite Nutri-Health supplement is Flora Sinus® Seasonal Support:

“I’ve been looking for a natural sinus solution for most of my life,” says Carolyn. “I’ve tried traditional options, but wanted something that didn’t dry me out and that worked with my body. When I learned we had a natural sinus health product I was so excited to try it!”

“I started taking Flora Sinus at the recommended 3 capsule a day serving suggestion, and after just a few weeks I noticed a real improvement. I felt better than ever with no unpleasant drying or other side-effects and have been recommending this product to just about everyone. I can’t emphasize enough that Flora Sinus is a cumulative product, meaning it works best over time to help support clear sinus health daily and all through the season.”

We have a new multi-mineral supplement that includes a trace mineral complex called Aquamin. I’ve had some questions from customers wanting to know more about Aquamin, so I thought I’d provide some answers here:

• Aquamin is sourced from a specific algae found in only three locations in the world. This algae is gathered as a mature plant, which encourages sustainability.

• The algae is washed, dried, and milled for use as a nutrient and contains more than 70 trace minerals plus essential minerals calcium and magnesium.

• There are no extra “fillers” added to Aquamin, so you get the bone and cellular health benefits of the ingredient’s trace minerals without any “extras.”

Nutri-Health’s Multi-Mineral Supplement

Nutri-Health’s Sea Minerals Multi-Plus features Aquamin plus added minerals magnesium, manganese, and selenium plus chromium for daily support. For more information on each of these minerals, visit our glossary page, and for more information on Aquamin, visit their website here.

Sea Minerals Multi-Plus

It’s good to know a little about different probiotics strains when shopping for a probiotic supplement. Probiotics support the natural microflora balance in the intestines. Probiotic strains promote digestive regularity, healthy bowels, and immune health, but they do not all perform the same health function.
Lactobacilli Probiotics
The best known of this probiotic genus (family) is Lactobacillus acidophilus, a probiotic strain commonly found in yogurt and in many supplements. But there are many types of Lactobacilli, mainly present in the small intestine, and they help:

Support carb and fat digestion in the small intestine by processing bile acids

Produce B vitamins and certain enzymes to support digestion

Support the health of the intestinal lining

Nutri-Health’s Flora Source® features 9 Lactobacilli strains, including L. acidophilus, to provide wide-spectrum small intestine and digestive support.*

Bifidobacteria Probiotics
This family of probiotics is exclusive to the large intestine (colon), and is important for supporting healthy bowels and a healthy transit time through the colon. Bifidobacteria help:

Produce essential B and K vitamins and amino acids

Alleviate occasional constipation and support healthy bowels

Promote a healthy, balanced colon

Flora Source features 5 different Bifidobacteria strains, including B. lactis HN019, which is clinically researched to support colon and immune health.*

There’s More!
There are other types of probiotics outside the Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria families. Flora Source includes two of these – Lactococcus lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus – which help break down lactose and promote regular digestion.*
