All About Chromium

broccoli-chromiumChromium is a trace mineral and chemical element with the symbol Cr and the atomic number 24. The element was discovered and isolated in the late 1700s by Nicolas Louis Vauquelin, a chemist in Paris. Its name comes from the Greek work “chroma”, meaning color, a reference to the fact that the element forms a variety of colorful compounds.

For over 60 years chromium has been of interest for its possible connection to various health conditions. Today we know that the element is used by the human body in small amounts to support critical bodily functions such as digestion and healthy blood sugar balance.

Chromium is found naturally in a wide variety of foods. However, most foods only provide small amounts of the element. One of the best sources of chromium is broccoli. Providing an estimated 18 mcg per one cup serving, this vegetable is the only food labeled as an “excellent” source of trace mineral by the George Mateljan Foundation for the World's Healthiest Foods. Whole-grain products like barley and oats, as well as green beans, tomatoes, romaine lettuce and black pepper are good sources.

It’s important to note that dietary intake of chromium is difficult to determine because the content of the mineral in foods is greatly impacted by manufacturing processes and farming practices. In addition, absorption of chromium from the intestinal tract is low, ranging from just 0.4% to 2.5% of the amount consumed, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements. The mineral’s absorption can be enhanced by vitamin C and the B vitamin, niacin.

As we get older, our chromium levels begin to decline. This drop is probably related to dietary intake, as some research groups have concluded that chromium intake in older persons is frequently below recommended amounts.

glucoprotect 6x180 day money back guaranteeDue to the difficulty in assessing chromium levels in foods and low absorption rates, along with the decline in the levels as we age, supplementation of the mineral has become a popular way to ensure you’re getting the amount your body needs to function optimally.

Chromium supplementation has been extensively studied for its positive benefits on blood sugar levels. And, the combination of the trace mineral with biotin has been shown to be particularly helpful to maintaining healthy, steady glucose levels.

Our GlucoProtect 6X uses a special form of chromium called ChromeMate® which binds the essential mineral to niacin to enhance the effectiveness of the element. You get the research dosage of 600 mcg of ChromeMate, along with biotin and other natural nutrients, to help curb cravings and keep your blood sugar levels balanced.
