Bamboo for Bone Health
Bamboo is an edible grass that’s the fastest-growing plant in the world. In fact, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, certain species of the plant can grow at a rate of 91 cm (35 in) per day.
The botanical has been part of the diet of mankind for thousands of years and is the principal food for many species of mammals. Two animals that commonly feast on bamboo are the Indian elephant and Giant Panda of China.
Did you know that while the Indian elephant is smaller than its African cousin, it is much stronger? The Giant Panda’s skeletal system is incredibly strong, yet very flexible. These unique properties of the Indian elephant and Giant Panda are thought to be related, in some part, to the high silica content of bamboo.
Silica is a form of silicon, the second most common element on earth. (Only oxygen is more common.) Silicon is also the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust, where it is chiefly found in the form of silica or silicon dioxide (also called flint).
Silica is widely known as a “beauty” nutrient and found in many hair, skin and nails formulas. But, it’s also a necessary mineral for your bones, cartilage, and connective tissues.
Several studies have found that dietary silicon intake is positively associated with higher bone mineral density (BMD), a marker of bone strength. And, preliminary animal studies demonstrated that low levels of silicon resulted in lower BMD and increases in collagen breakdown. (J Nutr Health Aging. 2007 Mar-Apr; 11(2): 99–110.)
It is believed that silicon is involved in bone formation through the synthesis of collagen. Collagen has an important structural role in animals contributing to the architecture and resilience of bone and connective tissue. It’s also the most abundant protein in bone matrix and is a major component of connective tissues found in your cartilage and tendons.
Bamboo extract is the richest known source of natural silica, containing over 70% organic silica. This is more than 10 times the level as found in the widely used Horsetail plant (Equisetum) that contains just 5-7% silica.
Our TruBone Complete includes 6mg of Bamboo stem silica to help support your bone health and healthy cartilage.
