Lutein for Eye Health
Lutein is a potent antioxidant and xanthophyll (yellow pigments that form one of two major divisions of the carotenoid group). The nutrient gets its name from the Latin word luteus, which means "yellow". In fact, the carotenoid is responsible for the yellow color of fruits, vegetables, and egg yolks. It also causes the yellow hue of chicken skin and fat.
Lutein is concentrated in the macular pigment of your eyes where it, along with its partner zeaxanthin, helps to filter out harmful blue light that can damage your cells. By limiting the amount of blue light that enters the eye, these powerful antioxidants help protect against free radical damage and keep your eyesight clear and focused.
Of the 600 carotenoids found in nature only lutein and zeaxanthin are deposited in high quantities in the retina (macula) of the eye. The quantity of these nutrients in the macular region of the retina can be measured as macular pigment optical density (MPOD). Recently, MPOD has become a useful biomarker for predicting visual function.
You're born with a certain amount of lutein in your eye, but your body doesn't reproduce it. Therefore, to keep your levels of the nutrient adequate, you need to be sure your diet includes plenty of lutein-rich foods.
The carotenoid is present in the highest quantities in dark, leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach, collard greens, and turnip greens. You can also find it in orange peppers, yellow carrots, canned corn, Japanese persimmon, and eggs.
Supplementation is another popular way to ensure you’re supplying your body with enough of the critical eye nutrient. There is no recommended daily allowance (RDA) set for lutein. However, the American Optometric Association recommends 10mg daily.
In 2013, a large vision study indicated that taking 10mg lutein and 2mg zeaxanthin each day as part of a supplement regimen helped to support eye health and preserve vision.
Additional research has found the combination of lutein and zeaxanthin helps promote better glare tolerance, reduces visual stress and supports your macula. A particular form of lutein called FloraGLO® was also found to improve visual performance in low light conditions.
