Valerian is the sleep-inducing herb also called Valeriana officinalis. There are over 200 types of valerian, but only European Valerian—the kind that’s in Sleep Wave™—has the ability to ease stress, support all sleep stages, and improve your general sleep quality.


One Swedish study followed 27 participants—20 women and 7 men with an age range of 25 to 68 years old—who had suffered from sleep difficulties and fatigue. All had been sleeping just 4 to 6 hours a night. After taking one dose of European Valerian, 89% reported improved sleep, and 44% said they got “perfect sleep” versus placebo. No side effects were observed. None of the participants reported next-morning grogginess, and none suffered from nightmares, which can be experienced with traditional sedatives.


In a small double-blind, 3-week crossover-like study conducted in Switzerland with 8 volunteers—3 women and 5 men with an age range of 33 to 59 years old—who had issues getting to sleep, valerian was shown to help them get to sleep almost twice as fast compared to placebo.


Considered to be one of the largest studies ever conducted with valerian, a study involving 128 Swiss volunteers—72 men and 56 women, with 41% being over 40 years old—showed valerian improved sleep quality compared to placebo, especially amongst those who identified themselves as habitually poor or irregular sleepers. It was also shown that valerian helped individuals fall asleep more quickly compared to placebo, especially if subjects were older.


Hops has been found to increase the effectiveness of valerian. A Swiss trial examined 27 people with sleep difficulties. While those who were given valerian alone saw some improvement, valerian combined with hops helped even more—reducing participants’ fall-asleep time from 56.5 minutes to an average of just 12.0 minutes.


Lemon Balm is an herb that’s also been shown to boost valerian’s ability to keep you asleep. In a clinical trial, a mixture of lemon balm and valerian helped reduce night awakenings by 60%. Those who took the mixture also reported a significant improvement in the “feeling of well-being.”


Another clinical trial found people taking lemon balm spent more time in Delta Wave sleep—your deepest and most regenerating stage of sleep. And after the trial, they even did better on a concentration-performance test than a placebo group.


Melatonin helps trigger your “internal clock”, telling your body when it’s time to sleep. In an experiment conducted at MIT, melatonin was shown to help men fall asleep up to 5 times faster than those who did not take melatonin.


Chamomile is the top ingredient of sleep-inducing herbal teas. A University of Pennsylvania study showed chamomile may help reduce the nervousness or tension that’s keeping you from falling asleep.
