To create vitamin D, your skin must be exposed to sunlight without sunscreen or protective clothing. Concerns about the effects of the sun have led to more people looking for other ways to ensure their bodies have enough of this vitamin.

Research continues to show this essential vitamin is linked to nearly every health system in the body. Keeping levels adequate is an essential key to optimal health. 

Most people know the important role vitamin D plays in protecting your bones. Your body requires it to absorb calcium. When your levels are insufficient, you are at risk of lower bone density and bone loss. 

This vitamin is also needed to help your body process sugar. And, research has found that lower vitamin D levels are associated with a higher risk of blood sugar imbalance. 

What’s more, studies have shown that it can help keep you active. One trial found that seniors with the higher blood levels of vitamin D experienced better physical mobility than the group with lower blood levels of vitamin D over the study period. 

The government’s “Recommended Daily Allowance” (RDA) for vitamin D is 600 IU for adults 70 and younger and 800 IU for adults over 70. However, the Vitamin D Council reports that a healthy human body utilizes around 3,000-5,000 IU of this vitamin per day for proper functioning. Leading scientists have argued that the current recommendation of just 600-800 IU daily may not be enough to raise or maintain the this vitamins level necessary for proper health.
